India's head coach also reiterated that despite the loss, Jasprit Bumrah would play just two more Tests as per a pre-series plan

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced his support for the team's lower-order batsmen, despite their recent collapses in the first Test against England at Headingley. The match saw England complete a remarkable 371-run chase to secure victory.

A Tale of Two Collapses

Despite posting a competitive 835 runs and featuring five centurions, including Rishabh Pant's centuries in both innings, India fell short due to two crucial batting collapses.

  • The first innings saw a loss of 7 wickets for just 41 runs.
  • In the second innings, the team lost 6 wickets for 31 runs.

These collapses transformed a potentially dominant position into a chaseable target for England.

Gambhir's Perspective

Shubman Gill, after his century, mentioned the team was aiming for a target of around 435. Gambhir, however, believes that India could have sealed the game by scoring 570-580 in the first innings.

Despite the disappointing performance of the lower order, Gambhir defended their efforts. He noted that Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna's dismissals, while perhaps ill-advised, were not due to a lack of effort.

"Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir stated. "It's not like they're not working hard in the nets... Even proper batters fail."

He emphasized that the lower-order collapse was not the sole reason for the defeat.

Costly Dropped Catches

Another significant factor in India's loss was their poor catching performance. The team dropped as many as seven catches, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. Ben Duckett, who was dropped on 97, went on to score a crucial 149, highlighting the cost of these missed opportunities. Gill acknowledged the need for improvement in this area, especially on challenging wickets.

No Excuses

While acknowledging the team's youth, Gambhir refused to use it as an excuse for the defeat. He stressed the pride of representing India and the commitment to winning every game.

"A young team is not an excuse... We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win the test match and win the series."

Bumrah's Workload Management

Gambhir also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would only play two more Test matches in the series, as part of a pre-series plan to manage his workload. The decision on which two matches Bumrah will participate in is yet to be finalized. Gambhir expressed confidence in the remaining bowlers to compete effectively, emphasizing the trust placed in them.
